hippaIs your company a health care provider? Is your company HIPAA compliant when it comes to its backup procedures? As a market, the healthcare industry is under Congressional mandate to conform to HIPAA data security and contingency planning standards. HIPAA requires those in the healthcare industry to have an off-site, encrypted remote electronic data backup and a contingency plan to meet the mandated Administrative Procedures in the Act. Every practitioner, be they doctor, clinic, hospital, testing lab, surgery center, or any of the other organization that provides services to individuals and stores patient medical records, must backup to a secure, encrypted (for privacy) off-site location each day. The Gulf South DataVault product utilizes 448-bit blowfish encryption to protect this sensitive data.

Research has shown that more than 80% of the businesses suffering from catastrophic data loss have gone out of business within 12 months. This is not hard to believe considering the extent computers are relied upon in businesses of all sizes. Daily tape backups may not be enough to protect your company's critical data. Tapes can damaged or unusable without notice. This is usually discovered when attempting to restore data that has either been deleted due to user error or hardware failure. Tapes should be removed from your office daily. This is often forgotten until disaster strikes and your tape media is destroyed by water, fire or even lost or stolen.

dc-photoshopOne solution to this problem is the GSTS DataVault. DataVault is our off-site online backup service. Through our DataVault service, you can safely and securely backup and restore your data via the internet. Your data is stored at our Data Center on redundant hardware and monitored 24/7/365.

How secure is it?

You have three encryption options. They are as follows:

  • DES was adopted in 1977 by the US Government, uses a 56 bit key.
  • Triple DES which is substantially stronger than DES, and uses a 168 bit key.
  • Blowfish was designed in 1993 as a fast and secure alternative to DES, using keys of up to 448 bits.
